π¨ Producers realistically should be focused on either one of two things, growing produce or marketing their produce.
π Why it matters
The existing structure incentives them to focus on growing their produce. More in yield, the better.
Local middle-agents, mandi(s)and collection centers provide them avenues to sell their produce.
Benchmarked prices of the produce are applied locally and every produce harvested is relatively assessed from the benchmark price.
π Go deeper
Letβs suppose you the want the producer to change their behaviour and also do marketing of their produce. On what attributes should they start?
Can they say, I have used least amount of chemicals while growing produce. There is no benchmark for it , though.
Can they say, I have used a different seed that is nutritional in nature. There is no price for varietal difference for most produce.
3οΈβ£ Can they say, look at the physical attributes of the produce. In essence, grade. While the established marketplace channels has no such benchmarks but just a subjective assessment of the person buying and producer selling locally.
